I found this passage interesting....
"(While) the partisans who are now fighting for the mastery of the modern world wear shirts of different colors, their weapons are drawn from the same armory, their doctrines are variations of the same theme, and they go forth to battle singing the same tune with slightly different words. . . .
Throughout the world, in the name of progress, men who call themselves communists, socialists, fascists, nationalists, progressives, and even liberals, are unanimous in holding that government with its instruments of coercion must by commanding the people how they shall live, direct the course of civilization and fix the shape of things to come. . . . The premises of authoritarian collectivism have become the working beliefs, the self-evident assumptions, the unquestioned axioms, not only of all the revolutionary regimes, but of nearly every effort which lays claim to being enlightened, humane, and progressive.
So universal is the dominion of this dogma over the minds of contemporary men that no one is taken seriously as a statesman or a theorist who does not come forward with proposals to magnify the power of public officials and to extend and multiply their intervention in human affairs. Unless he is authoritarian and collectivist, he is a mossback, a reactionary, at best an amiable eccentric swimming hopelessly against the tide. It is a strong tide. Though despotism is no novelty in human affairs, it is probably true that at no time in twenty-five hundred years has any western government claimed for itself a jurisdiction over men's lives comparable with that which is officially attempted in totalitarian states. . . .
But it is even more significant that in other lands where men shrink from the ruthless policy of these regimes, it is commonly assumed that the movement of events must be in the same direction. Nearly everywhere the mark of a progressive is that he relies at last upon the increased power of officials to improve the condition of men."

Milton Friedman:
There are four ways in which you can spend money. You can spend your own money on yourself. When you do that, why then you really watch out what you’re doing, and you try to get the most for your money. Then you can spend your own money on somebody else. For example, I buy a birthday present for someone. Well, then I’m not so careful about the content of the present, but I’m very careful about the cost. Then, I can spend somebody else’s money on myself. And if I spend somebody else’s money on myself, then I’m sure going to have a good lunch! Finally, I can spend somebody else’s money on somebody else. And if I spend somebody else’s money on somebody else, I’m not concerned about how much it is, and I’m not concerned about what I get. And that’s government.

Watch for the caltrate commercial here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_BYd-vQfYk
Then watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxwjLp25Hd0
I know they say "It's never too late for caltrate!" in both, but one version is just ridiculous

Eşkıya
For all who know Acar, you need to download this movie. This is the most bad ass Turkish movie I have ever seen. You can download it at mininova as Eskiya. The name means bandit and the protagonist looks like a bald Acar. He's so badass

Chapter 2
Chapter 2: TGIF
I just got out of class and I was hungry. I was sauntering towards O-Hill as usual when, suddenly, I ran into a certain bike rider whose motto always was Go Where the Free Food Is. I watched as he locked up his bike in front of the Physics Building and effortlessly leaped up three flights of stairs within seconds. It took me 3 minutes to climb those same stairs. Eventually, I caught up to him in the Reference Room becoming more skeptical by the minute that anything edible could be found in such a godforsaken space. Then, as I nearly fell faint to the floor with feelings of famishment, finally, the fresh, fine aroma of Dominos found me. It was Free Food Friday in the Fisx building.

Optics Lecture (zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)
So I saw Gallagher (the professor, not the watermelon-death-machine) today! Hes in town doing an external review of William & Mary's physics department. I know his lectures were rough, but he's very nice - he came and found me and said hello 'n stuff.
Last semester we had the Cass, this semester its the Gallagher, I wonder who's next -
hopefully Ajar - oooh, if only....
I can dream.....

Crayon Physics
To all the slackers in the reference room,
This is worth looking at. It's kind of like that MIT physics drawing program mixed with Paper Mario, cuz it's just amazing! You can probably get the deluxe version from torrent sites.
Check it out at http://www.crayonphysics.com/
Enjoy,

nice...real nice
I post here for the first time. I am surrounded by physicsy people talking Hamiltonians and scratching their balls. I hear a sound...THAT WAS EASY! I get back to work. I am interrupted 10 seconds later. Time for a Castle break. I nod appropriately as my anticipatory stomach and tiring brain converge on a Red Bull like a Fourier series of a periodic function on that given function.
That ends Chapter 1 of "The Reference Room: Chronicles of Ed_Oc_121."
That ends Chapter 1 of "The Reference Room: Chronicles of Ed_Oc_121."
HELLLOOOOOO
//walks into reference room
Go to sleep Yuehaw. Do your lab reports Emmett. Let's go get some beer Matt.
:)
Ramblings I
I was sitting in my office one day, and I had work to do, and I was just thinkin how awesome it would be if I could go to Jesse Beams Lab, up to the third floor, and hang out in the reference room......
and then chat and socialize and not get any work done.
Thus I thought, why not have a virtual reference room?
(rhetorical question... I know there are lots of reasons not to)
plus, despite the size of the readings available on the internet, i got bored of reading the same stuff...
also...... you, you got what i neeeeeeed, but you say hes just a friend, but you say hes just a friend......
